Orchestra: a load of rubbish!
Wednesday 10 June 2009
Tuesday morning and musician Saul arrived at school to share his orchestra with the children in all classes. When the instruments were laid out in the classroom, it might not have been quite what the children expected...
Tin can drums; a glockenspiel made from scaffolding pipes; car parts for the harmony and the bass played on oil drums! This was an orchestra that is truly made from junk. Saul Eisenberg, who takes his orchestra around the country, explained to the children that it was a great opportunity to mix his passion for music and his feeling that there is too much junk and waste in the world.
Saul entertained the four classes with different shows and workshops as appropriate. Giving the chance for children to play the instruments together and make music. First though he explained and demonstrated the instruments- with an engaging and insightful repertoire. The children had a chance to think about pulse, rhythm and harmony.
As well as the music aspect it was a part of the year 5 and 6 theme on the environment- thinking about reusing and recycling our waste.
This was a fantastic day that everyone, children and staff greatly enjoyed and we would all like to thank Saul for coming.
