St Michaels Primary School, Playden, Rye, East Sussex

Years 5 & 6

We are also known as TIGERS!

Miss Hoad is the class teacher.

Children in Class 4 have the opportunity to take part in a 5 day residential visit to an environmental study centre every two years. This year the class stayed at Rippledown House, near Deal.

Children also learn French.

Throughout their careers in the school the children are encouraged to take a responsible attitude to learning by assessing their own work and setting targets for themselves. This is particularly true among the older children. Both year groups are made aware of the demands of the National Curriculum tests, which are taken in Year 6, and work with their teacher in monitoring their progress towards these tests.

Children in Year 5 and 6 take on responsibilities such as house captains, librarians and editors of the Welcome screen. The children help to support other classes across the school.

Topics for this year are:

Terms 1 & 2 : Ancient Greece

Terms 3 & 4 : Mountain High

Terms 5 & 6 : Jewel of the East

Visit to Devonshire Primary School in London

As part of linking up with another primary school in a different part of the country we recently visited Devonshire Primary School in Sutton (our partner school) and spent the day working together on thinking skills. Before we went there all the children in the class had been emailing a pen friend at Devonshire and have been swapping details during the last few weeks.

When we arrived we spent some time in the hall getting to know our pen friends and then it was time for PLAY! Play-time was very interesting with both schools a little hesitant in joining together. But then a football suddenly appeared and a huge game of football started. The boys were sorted at least! But once we got into our groups for the day the ice was broken and all was well.

Group challenges included building the tallest free-standing structure from straws, card and paper and no glue or sellotape.

We also worked together to solve lots of different logic puzzles, brainteasers and problem solving.

We also learnt that the children who go to Devonshire come from many different countries and lots of children do not speak English as their main language. If you click on the photograph below you can clearly see the countries that the children come from. Look at the flags and find out what country each one represents.

An invitation to Eid. Find out about this celebration!

Let me entertain you!

Having lunch in one of the Year 6 classrooms.

We shall keep in contact with our pen pals. After Christmas we are going to invite the children from Devonshire to spend the day with us in Playden. Now that will be different!

Percussion workshops

The children have just started a series of percussion workshops with Mr Stokes on Tuesday afternoons. They are currently learning to play some Brazilian rhythms as a big orchestra. It sounds great!
