Foundation Stage Curriculum
The period from age 3 to the end of the Reception Year is described as the Foundation Stage. The curriculum is organised into six areas of learning:
1. Personal, Social and Emotional Development
2. Language and Literacy
3. Mathematical Development
4. Knowledge and Understanding of the World
5. Physical Development
6. Creative Development
Much of the learning takes place through practical hands-on activities. Structured play, such as in the home corner or using construction sets, is seen as an important part of the youngest children’s development, enabling them to develop new skills and understanding and build relationships with other children and adults in the classroom.
Phonics and rhyme are taught using a variety of approaches as an aid to reading and spelling. Children practice letter formation in a cursive script and parents are given guidance on how to help their child if they wish to write at home.

The school has a Foundation Stage scheme of work which parents are welcome to see on request.
In our most recent Ofsted inspection (October 2008), the Foundation Stage was judged to be "outstanding".
