Smuggling trip

On Tuesday, 20th October, Year 5 and 6 went for a day of smuggling research.
The first stop was the Smugglers Adventures, in Hastings' St Clement's caves, where smugglers once stored their merchandise. The children enjoyed exploring the caves, viewing the freeze frame exhibits; listening to audio; watching the videos and reading the information. The caves also have a number of interactive activities; including lift the weight of a tea sack; quizzes and a race between the customs men and smugglers.

The class descended the West Hill on the West Hill Cliff Railway, a first for most of the pupils, before walking to meet the coach.

On arrival in Rye, the trip continued with a visit to Ypres tower, where the children were treated to a highly informative and interesting talk from Jo Kirkham. Much was learned about smuggling generally but also specifically about Rye's place "as the capital of smuggling". As part of their learning children made notes as they listened and they filled many pages of great details. The visit was completed with a look around the tower, where children could feel the weight of axes and swords as well as see the conditions that the prisoners had to exist in.

Many thanks to Jo Kirkham and everyone at Rye Museum- a visit comes highly recommended from the children in Year 5/6.
